Evidence Action Communication Design

Evidence Action: Building a Communication System for Scale

There is a particular kind of communication challenge that comes with organisational growth. When a development organisation expands across geographies, programmes and partnerships, its communication needs to scale accordingly, not just in volume but in coherence. Evidence Action, an organisation that takes evidence-based interventions and scales them to reach millions, faces this challenge at a level few peers do. Wishbox Studio’s communication design work for the organisation was built to meet that scale.

The Brief

Beyond individual reports and one-off publications, Evidence Action needed a communication design system that could carry across the full spectrum of materials it produces: programme briefs, donor updates, advocacy documents, internal reports, conference presentations and digital communication. The brief was as much about system thinking as it was about visual design. A coherent identity at this scale is built not from individual artefacts but from the rules and templates that allow many people, across many teams, to produce consistent work.

The Design Approach

Wishbox approached the work as an institutional branding exercise. The visual system was built around modular components, grids, type styles, colour usage rules, photography treatment and infographic conventions, that could be assembled to suit different document types without losing visual continuity. A funder report, a programme one-pager and a policy brief should all feel like they come from the same organisation, even when their content and audiences differ significantly.

The colour palette was developed to support categorisation across programme areas while maintaining an overall institutional tone. Typography was selected for legibility across long-form reports and short-form digital content alike. Photography guidelines emphasised authentic, contextual imagery of programmes in the field, with people centred rather than abstracted.

Why a System Matters

Impact communication design at scale is often undone by inconsistency. A single excellent report can be undermined by a poorly aligned slide deck or a thinly designed programme brief. By developing a comprehensive system, Wishbox gave Evidence Action a communication infrastructure that would hold up across the breadth of its output, regardless of who was producing it.

Who Benefits

The primary beneficiaries of a strong communication system are the organisation’s internal teams, who can produce high-quality materials without needing to reinvent the visual language each time. External stakeholders benefit through clarity and coherence, the cumulative effect of seeing many different documents that all feel like they belong to a credible, organised institution.

The Wider Impact

For organisations operating at the scale Evidence Action does, communication is not a cosmetic concern. It is operational. The investment in a robust design system pays returns across every document the organisation produces, year after year, and supports the kind of institutional credibility that complex development work depends on.
