Bhubaneswar Low Carbon Mobility Plan 2040
LCMP aims at the “development of a transit-oriented city, that is well connected, climate resilient, and promotes inclusive, safe, clean, passenger and freight mobility choices, while conserving energy and reducing GHG emissions”.
Imagine Bhubaneswar in 2040. How will people live and travel around the city twenty years from now?
When Bhubaneswarites were asked what kind of Smart City they wanted to live in, the answer was clear: one that provides a better quality of life for all. In our future city, citizens should have access to active, connected, and sustainable transport choices to get wherever they need to go.
Streets should be inclusive and designed to be used by all residents, regardless of their age, size, income, ability or disability. It is a city where our children can travel safely between their schools and homes; where they can easily cross the streets and access vibrant public spaces to play, learn, and grow. We want to live in a Bhubaneswar that is green, clean, and prepared for climate change; a city coexists in harmony with nature.
Reliable, affordable, and safe transport is essential for good quality of life in cities. As Bhubaneswar develops and becomes home to more residents, the city is acting to ensure that it remains a healthy, thriving, and livable place for all. One way in which Bhubaneswar is taking action is by creating a Bhubaneswar Low Carbon Mobility Plan 2040.
About the Bhubaneswar Low Carbon Mobility Plan 2040
What do we mean by “low-carbon mobility”? Put simply, this term refers to a transport system that reduces the amount of harmful carbon dioxide released into our environment. Carbon emissions are a known driver of global warming and climate change, which can wreak havoc on life in cities.
The Bhubaneswar Low Carbon Mobility Plan 2040 (LCMP) is a strategic document that assesses the current status of mobility in the city and helps plan for its future. It provides a 20-year vision for the city that accounts for growing transportation needs, with goals and strategies that enhance economic, social and environmental sustainability.
The plan will focus on
01
Optimising how people and goods move around Bhubaneswar
02
Improving public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure, and shared mobility options
03
Enabling a holistic approach that integrates decisions about land use and transport planning
04
Prioritizing accessibility, inclusivity, safety, and equity for all sections of society
Vision for Bhubaneswar 2040
01
Promotion of transit stations for enabling seamless/smooth transport-mode changes between cyclists, pedestrians and users of public transport, that lead to a compact urban form and a transit-oriented city.
03
Strengthen non-motorised transport, safe intersections, and green, inclusively designed public places and corridors for a child-friendly city.
05
Promoting Bhubaneswar as a regional economic centre that attracts knowledge-based enterprises and sustainable tourism, by leveraging and empowering the city’s institutions, local businesses and informal work force.
02
Reduce reasons to travel by fostering mixed-use areas that combine housing with socially and economically diverse educational and recreational opportunities, leading to a liveable city.
04
Fostering low-emission freight & passenger transport, walking, cycling and affordable public transport that reduce air pollution and GHG emissions, leading to an eco-city.
